Observational epidemiological studies showed correlation and are hypothesis-generating, as opposed to hypothesis-testing. Experimental research (gold standard being randomized controlled) determine causation. Ancel Keys' Seven country study & China study are epidemiologic studies and did not prove causation. That is why you hear all kinds of conflicting results on the news media because these results are all from observational studies which does not prove causation. Low fat diet recommendations started out of observational studies & was never proved to be useful in subsequent science. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJYlXmfb08M Sorry for pausing 5 months. I tried too hard to share my findings about nutrition that I was exhausted. I felt nobody was willing to change their long-held beliefs in the low-fat diet. Then, one speaker at a Lipidology seminar talked about Atkins' diet and he also mentioned resistance that he met in previous talks. I was relieved to hear that I am not the only one who hit the wall. Then, someone passed the news about Sweden's nutritional guidelines which further gave me encouragement. Here's the encouraging news:
Sweden Becomes First Western Nation to Reject Low-fat Diet Dogma in Favor of Low-carb High-fat Nutrition Sweden has become the first Western nation to develop national dietary guidelines that reject the popular low-fat diet dogma in favor of low-carb high-fat nutrition advice. The switch in dietary advice followed the publication in September 2013 of a two-year study by the independent Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment. The committee reviewed 16,000 studies published before May 31, 2013. [1]. This report turns the current concepts upside down and advocates a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, as the most effective weapon against obesity. The expert committee consisted of ten physicians, and several of them were skeptics to low-carbohydrate diets at the beginning of the investigation.
